Exactech Hip Replacement Recall Information
In July 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of certain Exactech hip, knee, and ankle replacement devices. The recall is due to a risk of the devices failing, leading to various potentially serious health risks, as well as a potential need for additional surgery.
According to recall information, the devices were packaged in such a way that the materials were at risk for oxidation. Oxidation of the devices can lead to device fatigue, cracking, and fracture. It can also cause breakage, which could produce debris. More than 89,000 devices are included in the recall, including the Exactech Connexion GXL acetabular polyethylene liner component.
The Exactech hip replacement devices that use the Connexion GXL liners include:
- Exactech Acumatch
- Exactech Novation
- Exactech MCS

Lawsuits are already being filed against Exactech. These lawsuits claim that patients have experienced pain and suffering due to the defective hip replacement devices. Lawsuits allege that Exactech knew, or should have known, about the hazards associated with the hip replacement devices and components.
It is further alleged that Exactech had previously received numerous reports of early wear and osteolysis among patients who had hip replacement surgery that involved the Connexion GXL Liners. Instead of alerting healthcare providers and patients about the potential risks, Exactech continued to market their product as being more durable than previous versions.
An increasing number of patients continue to come forward with complaints about the recalled Exactech devices. Sadly, many of those coming forward are suffering intense pain and will require corrective surgery.
